Today I was loading up my office iTunes, when what to my wondering eyes did appear under the “Singles” category, but a golden oldie from my freshman year in high school. The title alone brought memories surging back to me. Listening to it slammed me firmly back into the 9th grade and my painful metamorphosis from gawky kid to something else. Its the only song by this artist that I like, and isn’t my preferred style of new wave music, but growing up in the 70’s and 80’s in Central Florida meant you were a mix of southern rock, classic rock and whatever new trend came down I-4.
The song transported me all the way back to 1979? “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” by the Charlie Daniels Band (CDB). My favorite part was the chorus (which still makes no sense to me):
Fire on the mount’n, run boys, run.
The devil’s in the house of the risin’ sun.
Chicken in the bread pin, pickin’ out dough.
“Granny, does your dog bite?”
“No, child, no.”
What a little cracker I was…ok, still am…
Lots going on this time of year, not to mention its now a little more than one month until graduation…
Major news: Leaves on trees, and shrubs and bushes – yes, they’re starting to come back, and I couldn’t be happier. There’s nothing uglier than a naked tree.
Free the piggies campaign starts, then stops, then starts again…today, they’re half free, wishing they were still wearing those blasted warming appliances. Soon, though, they be free at last, free at last for at least the late spring and all of summer!
Cherry blossoms in DC – its that time of year again. I went last year and was mostly underwhelmed. I thought it might have been because I went right after peak, and on a weekend when there were too many people milling about to really enjoy the experience. So I went again on Sunday. I discovered that I was still underwhelmed by the blossoms – guess they’re not really my thing, and the crowds of people were still too much. While downtown, though I paid my first visit to the Hirshhorn museum & sculpture garden and loved it. This is especially interesting as I am not that much of a modern art fan. It also could have been the company.
Up next: inline skating on the B&A trail. Keep your fingers crossed that its warm enough this weekend!
I won’t go into great detail, but let’s just say that recently Abby chomped down on my right hand and punctured (with one of her canine teeth) the very fleshy and tender region on my palm that connects to my thumb.
Here are the pertinent facts:
Yes, it is painful and the affected part is swollen to 1.5 times its normal size.
Yes, I am right handed.
Yes, I did go to the doctors.
Yes, I am on antibiotics.
Yes, I got a new tetanus shot.
Yes, the spot where the needle went in is very sore.
Yes, I look like dork wearing the sling the doctor so nicely provided.
No, they do not have the sling in basic black. (I asked)
Yes, I’ll be fine, if slightly less able for a few more days.
And yes, I am reminded why opposable thumbs are such a big deal, having lost the use of my right one for a few days.
Saw The musical Wicked yesterday, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I’d read the book first, and although the musical follows the book rather unfaithfully, it was a fun romp through the hereto before untold backstory of the famous Wizard of Oz tale. For those who have not read the book. Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, the relationship between the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch is as surprising as it is sweet. Novice that I am to the broadway theatrical world, I found the sets amazing and the music if not very complex, very enjoyable.
Such a popular ticket Wicked was, that Delegatrix and I were only able to get mid-week matinee tickets. From what I understand it sold in a matter of hours, so we were lucky to have gone at all. If you get a chance, go see it. Its a fun diversion.
Look for me wearing my Wicked long sleeve t-shirt overhead in the skies nearby…
New Years eve was spent at the home of Mike and Bill, two of the GoatMan Hollow founders, and until recently, the actual home of the GoatMan haunt. This was my first GoatMan New Years, and I finally saw what I had been missing these last few years… My friends.
